Exploding Head Syndrome: An unbearable Condition

What is Exploding Head Syndrome? It is a type of condition where the sufferer faces loud noise inside his lead sometimes and cannot bear this unusual pain that bring such irritating and heart pounding sound like ringing, explosion, roar, screams, gunshots, and screeches. However, such sounds that bang in head are the actual cause that prevent the person from sleep or awaken the person from sleep.

This type of flat head syndrome can occur in person while sleeping or while awakening. Though this cannot be called as hallucination, but the person remains disturbed due to this overstressed sounds. The sound make the person feel fear all the time and also increases heart rate. It is a kind of head attack often bring breathing problems for few seconds or a sudden bright flash of light that make the sufferer go unconscious.  Due to this condition, the sufferer stays away from social atmosphere and feels sick mentally. The sound banging in head remains very loud and unbearable due to which pain occurs in head. The frequency of this type of attack can remain constant and can occur several times in a week. This condition can disappear after a month or can take at least a year. In any case, the patient needs rest and have to get out of stressful atmosphere for some time until he/she feels free.


Exploding Head Syndrome Causes

The causes of this type of condition are still unknown, but doctors and psychologists did mention some of the causes that may possibly occur. The possible causes are listed below –
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Damage to nerve cells that are linked to brain
  • Damage to temporal lobe
  • Sudden/quick movement of middle ear

Exploding Head Syndrome Symptoms

Just like the causes, the symptoms of flat head syndrome is unknown, but the person who suffers from this rare complication can hear anything loud sound including falling of rocks, bomb explosion, gunshot, banging things, and loud ringing. This type of complication can also occur along with a flash of light. It happens very rare that the patient along with this loud noise get headache or different type of pain in the head. However, sudden flow of adrenaline kick can be experienced in the head. Due to this problem, some also experience fear of sleeping that can even cause insomnia in patients in time.

If the causes are vague, exploding head syndrome diagnosis and treatment become difficult. However, some of the evidences say that clomipramine can be helpful in reducing such type of irritable pain.
